Dr Pillay (BSc, MBChB, BAO, LRCP, FRACGP, MPhil) has worked in Skin Cancer Medicine for the last 12 years, having worked in general surgery, ENT and plastic surgery at the Mater and Gold Coast University Hospitals for 3 years prior to that. She obtained her FRACGP fellowship in 2017 and has successfully passed the surgical primary exam. Rachael has a special interest in both the surgical and non surgical management of skin cancers and has extensive experience in skin cancer surgery including facial flap and graft reconstructive surgery.
She has a particular interest in the management of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and holds a Masters degree from the University of Queensland, where her research consisted of developing mice models for the study and treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Rachael understands the importance of the early detection and management of all types of skin cancers particularly those in the head and neck region which have a high risk of spread. Utilising her past experience in plastic surgery she is passionate about minimising scarring and giving patients the best aesthetic outcome especially when it comes to surgery in cosmetically sensitive areas like the nose, ear and lips.
She also holds a certificate in dermoscopy and regularly attends the yearly skin cancer congress and dermoscopy masterclass in order to update her skills and keep abreast of any new developments in skin cancer medicine. Rachael is a member of the Skin Cancer College and Australian Institute of Dermatology and is happy to see patients for a wide range of skin conditions from the treatment of benign lesions and precancerous field change through to the surgical and non surgical management of all types of skin cancers.
