Dr Michael McKeough

Dr Michael McKeough is a Skin Cancer expert, with a strong focus and extensive experience in the surgical treatment of skin cancers, including the management of skin cancers affecting the face, head, neck and other complex sites.  He has extensive experience and training in the area of skin cancer medicine and surgery, and a thorough, caring and patient-centered approach to his practice.

Michael completed his undergraduate degree in Science (medicine), and Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) graduating with Honors through the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Michael completed his Internship and Residency years in Queensland, during which time he developed a strong interest in surgery and in particular the assessment, management and surgical treatment of skin cancers.

Michael obtained his RACGP fellowship with focused Extended Skills training in the area of skin cancer medicine and surgery in 2012, and then went on to complete his Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Medicine, Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Surgery, Certificate in Advanced Skin Cancer Surgery (head and neck, nose and lower limb) through the University of  Queensland. Following this, Michael has gone on to complete the Advanced Surgical Anatomy Course, successfully passed the Surgical Primary examination and completed and a two years Masters Degree in skin cancer medicine and surgery through the University of Queensland, with his final project focusing on reconstructive options for defects on the nose.

Michael has also completed RG advanced skills training in Surgery, which included several years of hospital-based training in general and plastic surgery with a strong focus on reconstructive techniques following skin cancer excision. Michael has worked at Royal Brisbane & Women’s  Hospital, Redlands Hospital, the Gold Coast University Hospital and also the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he was a key member in the establishment of the innovative Skin Lesion Assessment and Management clinic in 2018. In addition to his private work, Michael holds an appointment with Qld Health where he continues to work with the plastics and reconstructive surgical team at the Gold Coast University Hospital, and also provides regular surgical services to skin cancer patients in rural Qld.

Michael has a great deal of experience in managing a broad range of clinical problems, including benign (noncancerous) problematic lesions, pre-malignant skin changes, malignant non-melanoma skin cancers – basal cell cancers and squamous cell cancers, and melanoma skin cancer.

Michael has a depth of experience and expertise in utilizing a number of different techniques for the treatment of skin cancer, including: 

Surgical: 

  • Excision with primary closure, including wide local excision for melanoma
  • Surgical reconstruction of facial defects with local flap repair, with a focus on high functional and cosmetic outcomes after surgery (including scalp, lip, lid, ear and nose)
  • Partial and Full thickness skin grafting
  • Surgical scar revision and optimization

Non-surgical: 

  • Topical medications (creams)
  • Cryotherapy (freeze treatments)
  • Curettage and diathermy

Multidisciplinary Team: 

Michael works within the framework of a larger multidisciplinary team and has an established referral network for select cases which may require further referral, consultation and care; including: deramtopathology, radiation oncology, melanoma unit (sentinel lymph node management), digital mole mapping, plastic and reconstructive surgery and dermatology.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys spending time with his Wife and four children, and enjoys visual arts, travelling, reading, and playing tennis.
